A practical field guide for building a repeatable inspection habit: orient yourself, find the governing sheet, follow references, and verify what the detail actually says.

1. Start with the sheet index

Identify the drawing family and its place in the set before hunting for a familiar symbol. A structural plan may point to another sheet, while a general note can define where a detail applies.

2. Treat references as a route

Record the current sheet, destination sheet, and mark you are carrying. Locate the mark, read the complete callout, open the referenced detail, match the mark again, and use schedules or notes to resolve the requirement.

3. Verify before you answer

Separate what the drawing explicitly shows from what you infer. Use the referenced detail and governing note together, and identify the sheet, detail, and visual cue supporting your response.
